Large Cardamom or Black Cardamom, also known as Bara Elaichi, is a perennial herb with subterranean rhizomes. It is also known by the names, Bengal Cardamom, Hill Cardamom, Indian Cardamom, Greater Cardamom, Winged Cardamom, Nepal Cardamom and Brown Cardamom. Its aroma is similar to that of camphor or mint and is mostly used in savoury dishes rather than sweet or salty dishes. The fruit is round or oval shaped capsule with reddish brown colour. Each capsule is trilocular with many seeds.
It is an important spice as mentioned in Ayurveda as well. This has been used for many ailments for ages. It has been used for cough and cold, itching and pruritis, urinary tract-related diseases for the throat, sore throat and much more.
Large Cardamom is being produced since Ancient times and is native to the Sikkim Himalayan Region. It has a pleasant unique aromatic odour, due to which it is commonly used as a flavouring spice in India in the preparation of curries, soups, sausages and meat.
Large Cardamom has been conferred with the Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2008 with the GI Number 222.
